Inside page layout of newspapers

All these inside pages have a short story with an image beside them. These have all been located at the top of the page just bellow a banner that shows whats inside the newspaper. Below this shorter story is a much longer, more detailed story without an image accompanying it, there is simply just a headline, to go along with the story. I am going to use the short traffic story that I wrote at an earlier stage as the top story on this inside page.

Monday 5th December 2011

I feel today was very successful as I was finally able to decide on the font of the newspaper title with the help of the other students in my class. I really value their opinions as it helps me to progress in my project. Heres the Newspaper front cover so far. Next I will need to include my main image and side images.

The Results.

The results of the survey showed me that four out of 12 people in the class preferred the original font, 'Hoefler text' and lower case lettering. However the font with the highest vote was 'Perpetua Titling MT' with six people in the class voting for it. Here are all the results.

Problem

Today whilst working on my front cover I decided that the title doesn't look right in lower case lettering, as the 'y' in daily hangs down outside the margin that it is supposed to be in. Unfortunately I do not like the way this looks so I am going to send a survey around the class to find out whether people like it or whether they preferred another option.

Completed Advert

Here is my completed advert. I think it looks really effective as the colours work well with the image that I have used. I researched online for a cheap but realistic price for the advertisement as I didn't want it to look fake. It looks bold and will look good in the completion of my newspaper front cover.

The New Title

Heres the new title on the Front cover. So far I like the way it looks as it isn't too bold. It will be easily recognizable on the page and as it is all one colour I think it will give the cover an informative feel.

The Results

Here are the results to my survey. I am quite surprised at the results as the audience have chosen a very simple font.
I think the choice is a good one and I will be happy to use this as the title font as I think it will stand out, and its not so bold that its intrusive.

The Font

The audience recently voted on the title of my newspaper. I now have to look at different fonts, and ask the question of what font shall the title 'The Daily Wave' be in. I am going to ask the same audience as before and I look forward to seeing the results.

Starting my Newspaper

I have started to design the layout of my Newspaper. I have begun with cropping and editing a picture that I took whilst on holiday to create an advertisement for the bottom of the page. I then looked at 'The News' and I am looking carefully at the design of the front cover so that I can model my front cover on their layout.
Heres the start of the front cover, I am quite please at how the advertisement looks.

The Results

After I published my survey, this is how people responded.

People seemed to take a liking to 'The Daily Wave' Therefore I will use this title, as hopefully this title will also appeal to a wider audience, as well as the small audience that responded to my survey.

The name of my Newspaper.

For the title of my newspaper I want to come up with something that will be easily remembered, that is simple and not too long. An example of this is: 'The News'. This title is short but very effective as it wont be forgotten because of its simplicity. I need something like this for the title of my newspaper, so in order to  come up with something like this I will conduct a survey so that I know that the audience will have a say in what the title of the newspaper will be.

The names that I have chosen to be put up to the public vote are:
Spinnaker Mail,
Portsmouth Today,
Portsmouth Daily,
The Daily Wave and
The Tide.

I have published a survey to my Facebook account for people to comment on.

Story idea images

Here are some images that I have started to gather from Copnor, for my local newspaper. There are images of litter in the street, a rubbish bin and recycle bin, and an empty overgrown field. I will chose the best one of these images to use with a short story that will be featured on the front cover.

The first draft of my newspaper story

MOTORISTS and the local community have 10 more weeks of disturbances due to the road works along Copnor road.

What started off as a 10-week closure of Burrfields Bridge, the traffic lights and lane closure leading on to Copnor Road has now become a 20-week disturbance.
The bridge is to be re-surfaced and re-waterproofed, and as a result of this work there have been delays for motorists for which now looks like 20 weeks.

The queues of traffic along Copnor road are backed up to Roko gym during rush hour and it is having an effect on the families living along the road.
Sarah Williams, who lives nearest to the road works said:
‘To get to my home on Copnor Road during rush hour is virtually impossible. I have to park three roads away and walk home as otherwise I will be spending half hour in traffic at least.’
The head teacher of Admiral Lord Nelson School relies on the bridge to get his students to and from school.
‘With the bridge closure, students who use the bus service that runs over the bridge are going to have to find an alternative route to get to school. This will mean that lateness will be an issue in the weeks to come, as the last 10 weeks of closure was during the summer holidays so there wasn’t a problem for the school but now this is going to become a big issue.’

Sources have said that ‘The builders who are working on the bridge are never there. They don’t look like they are in any rush to finish.’
Many Local members of the community have noticed the builder’s un-rushed approach to re-surfacing the bridge and are furious at the time extension.

In todays lesson I wrote my first newspaper story, however it still needs tweaking. I will post the finished article on my blog along with the pictures that I am going to use with the story.

Today I uploaded all my pictures so far on to Flickr and cropped the images to make them look more effective.

Before and after

Before and after, a set on Flickr.
I have played around with the images and I have cropped some of them to make them more effective. This way they will be better when presented on the front of the newspaper. i have placed the images next to their original so that the parts that i have cropped are clearer.

Traffic lights, car

I also like this image as it even shows a vehicle within the interruption and also shows the road works continuing with the cones and covered traffic lights. I think this image will be great for the front page story.

Sign post, Traffic Cones

I like this image because it highlights the problem, by the text on the sign. Straight away it will tell the reader about the story and the will be able to recognize the area as a vast majority of Portsmouth residents are familiar with these interruptions.
